Traveling with children is a mix of excitement and stress. One of the best things you can do to prepare is to become confident in the items you are bringing and have a plan on how you will transport all of your items. I would like to cover common questions in regards to traveling with a car seat.

Is every car seat approved for airplane travel?
No, it is not! This is the number one thing to check if you decide to travel with your everyday car seat. The side of your car seat will have a sticker that says it's approved for motor vehicles and aircraft in red print. Another important thing to note is that you cannot bring the base of your car seat on the aircraft.

2. Should I bring my everyday car seat or get a travel car seat?
There is no wrong answer to this question. I use the Evenflo Revolve 360 at home, which is very heavy and cannot be used in an aircraft anyway, so I have two dedicated travel car seats. One of the most important qualities when choosing a seat was weight. Most infant car seats are very light; however, toddler seats are typically not. The two I chose are the WAYB Pico and Cosco Scenera. Part Time Tourists graciously made a document comparing most of the popular car seats you can find here.
3. Is it safe to rent a car seat?
I have yet to do this, and I have heard horror stories about dirty or improperly fitting car seats rented from a car rental company. If I had to, I would call in advance and ask for pictures of what car seat I would be getting. I personally prefer to bring my own that I know how to install and know hasn't been in a wreck. There are reputable companies you can rent car seats from at your destination if needed. Two popular ones are Rents4Baby and Baby Quip.
4. How do you carry the car seat through the airport?
There are many comfortable ways to do this. If you want to carry it I recommend this bag. I typically have a carry on suitcase with me so I often use this strap to secure it onto my suitcase or stroller. Another great option is this car seat trolley which you can store away in the overhead bin or under a seat.
5. Will I bring my car seat on the plane or check it in?
The FAA recommends the use of a car seat for children and airplane seat belts only protect individuals weighing over 40lbs. In summary, it is safest to use a car seat on the aircraft. If you decide to check the car seat, I recommend gate-checking it and using a protective bag like this one.
6. What about international travel?
More than likely your car seat is illegal if you bring it to a international destination. To me, the risk of a ticket is something I am willing to chance. I bring my US based car seat with a locking clip.
The more you practice and prepare, the more comfortable you will be. Please let me know if there are any other questions you have. Have a game plan, practice installing your seat, and most importantly, enjoy your travels!
